PCI-DSS · SaaS Startups
PCI-DSS for SaaS Startups
SaaS platforms processing payments inherit PCI-DSS scope — even with Stripe.
Why this matters
Any card data flowing through your systems (even briefly) is in scope.
Iframe integrations still require SAQ-A-EP or higher.
Enterprise SaaS buyers with card handling ask for PCI + SOC 2 together.
Typical timeline
4–8 months for a typical SaaS with card-handling flows.
Typical cost
$15k–$60k depending on integration pattern.
What bites hardest in SaaS Startups
Frequently asked
If we use Stripe Elements, are we PCI compliant?
You reduce scope to SAQ-A or SAQ-A-EP but you still have PCI obligations — including monitoring the integration integrity.
Do I need PCI if I only pass tokens?
Tokenization eliminates most CDE scope but you still need SAQ-A and control of the tokenization boundary.
What's my PCI level?
Level 1: >6M transactions/year. Level 2: 1M–6M. Level 3: 20k–1M e-commerce. Level 4: everything else. Each brand (Visa, MC, etc.) publishes its own thresholds.
Does using Stripe eliminate PCI scope?
Using a hosted payment page or Stripe Elements can reduce scope to SAQ-A, but you still have PCI obligations. Iframes and direct card capture push you into broader SAQs.
Type 1 or Type 2 for enterprise deals?
Type 1 unblocks most first deals. Type 2 (6-month observation) is required by larger enterprise buyers. Start with Type 1 and roll into Type 2.
Do I need SOC 2 before I have customers?
Not before your first customer — but before your first enterprise customer, yes. Most deals over $100k ACV require it.
